Diamondbacks hit with brutal Corbin Burnes injury setback
The Arizona Diamondbacks have performed well in 2026. However, they received an unfortunate injury update on Wednesday. According to MLB insider Bob Nightengale, Corbin Burnes has suffered an injury setback.
“Diamondbacks ace Corbin Burnes has setback in his recovery from Tommy John surgery with a lat strain and will be shut down. Diamondbacks are hoping he can return in September,” Nightengale reported.
Burnes has been recovering from Tommy John surgery and the hope was that he could help Arizona during the second half of the season. July had been mentioned as a realistic timeline for his return. Now, there are no guarantees that he will even return this season. At the very least, the fact that Burnes has not been ruled out for the entire campaign is promising, but this setback is still far from ideal.
If the Diamondbacks can remain in contention until September, perhaps Burnes can return during the final month of the season and help the ball club make a postseason push. Contending in the National League all season long without the star pitcher will be a challenge, though.
The D’Backs are currently 32-28 overall and in third place in the National League West standings. Winning the NL West will be an extremely difficult challenge with the Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres ahead of them, but the Wild Card remains realistic.
Further updates on Corbin Burnes’ injury status will be provided as they are made available. For now, the Diamondbacks will focus on their game on Wednesday night against the Los Angeles Dodgers.
