Devils rumors: Nico Hischier contract negotiation update will get fans fired up
There have been many eyes on the Nico Hischier contract situation, with many looking to see what the contract extension will look like. Now, the latest update will have fans fired up, according to Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic.
“I mentioned earlier this week that all signs pointed to Nico Hischier likely eventually signing an extension based on the current tone of contract talks with the New Jersey Devils. I was told Thursday night that those talks were now over the hump in terms of the meaty part of negotiations. There is still work to be done on it, and it can’t be finalized until July 1 because he has one year left on his current deal, but barring an unforeseen obstacle as talks progress, teams that were hoping the Devils captain would become available are now moving on,” LeBrun wrote.
Numerous teams have expressed interest in Hischier, but might not get the chance to obtain him unless they offer a deal that is tough to reject. While it’s not set in stone, there could be a contract extension coming for the star. Hischier has been with the Devils since they drafted him in 2017.
With the Devils looking to bounce back in 2026-27, signing Hischier will be critical. LeBrun detailed the plan outlined by the team and the process.
“My understanding is the Devils wanted to go long term on the extension while Hischier’s camp, led by agent Allain Roy, started with a shorter-term proposition, and since then, the sides have found middle ground,” LeBrun added.
Hischier netted 28 goals and 66 overall points in 82 games last season. He has been among the better players on the team, and extending him is seen as a priority in New Jersey.
