Deion Sanders reveals Colorado football’s ‘hungry’ recruiting strategy after 3-9 season

Deion Sanders’ roster-building strategy has been anything but ordinary during his time as the head coach of the Colorado Buffaloes. Despite being at the helm of a team that has struggled for the majority of this century, Sanders has often landed top-level high school recruits and some of the biggest transfer portal prospects. Travis Hunter and his own son, Shedeur Sanders, stand out as the program’s best portal gets in recent years. Jordan Seaton was also one of the top high school recruits in the nation when he chose Boulder.

None of those players is still with the team, though, and Sanders’ program is coming off a disastrous season in which they went 3-9. Hype is still high with the Colorado football team, and the coach known as Prime Time has embraced a new recruiting strategy. Ahead of the 2026 season, Sanders again hit the transfer portal, but this time he sought out unheralded players with a chip on their shoulders.

“What I saw from this spring is a lot of guys that want to prove that they can play at this level,” former walk-on Ben Finneseth said about the state of the roster. “They’re hungry. We brought in guys that are pissed off because they weren’t recruited out of high school. They came in with a competitiveness and a work ethic. The cohesive mindset of all the players is the biggest difference that we’ve had compared to last season.”

Colorado was ranked by 24/7 Sports as having the 23rd-best transfer portal class. They’ve brought in 43 commits, none of which are five-star players, though. DeAndre More, Boo Carter, and Liona Lefau were the big name additions, but it is leadership and ability to overcome adversity that Sanders seemingly prioritized getting on his roster.

Julian Lewis will be the man under center this year for the Buffs, so Colorado still has plenty of raw talent and potential. It is the influx of hungry players who should help the Colorado football team get back on track, though.
