Curragh racing tips: Expert advice and best bets for Saturday 27 June

Saturday marks the second day of the Curragh’s Irish Derby meeting and there’s some excellent Group race action to look forward to across the afternoon.

There are seven races in total and you won’t want to miss the two competitive juvenile Group races on offer.

The race of the day is undoubtedly the Group 1 Pretty Polly Stakes, which offers the best three-year-old fillies the chance to claim top-level success. The impressive Oaks winner is among the field and she could be the one to beat once again.

Our expert has taken a closer look at the best races on the card and selected their strongest fancy in each. Joseph O’Brien had an excellent time at Royal Ascot last week and his good form can continue with victory in the main event, which takes place at 3.55.

Saturday Curragh tips

  • 2.15 Curragh – Confucius @ 2/5
  • 3.20 Curragh – Sun Goddess @ 4/9
  • 3.55 Curragh – Thundering On @ 8/11

2.15 Curragh – Confucius

Ballydoyle juveniles are always worth taking a look at in Irish Group races and 1,700,000 guineas purchase CONFUCIUS is no different. The son of No Nay Never is out of a Group 1-winning mare and he was an eye-catcher on debut over 5f here in April.

He ate up the ground once the penny dropped and it’s no surprise that the step up to 6f yielded results at Naas after that. Always prominent on that occasion, he saw the trip out very nicely to score by just shy of four lengths and a trip to Royal Ascot came next.

Ryan Moore picked him over stablemate Great Barrier Reef but picked the wrong one on that occasion. Confucius produced a solid display to finish sixth in the end and was less than two lengths behind the winner.

This race looks easier and he’s the one to beat here.

3.20 Curragh – Sun Goddess

Another one for Aidan O’Brien, SUN GODDESS was gunned down late on in the Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot last week when looking set for first place. She looked very green on debut but kept on eye-catchingly well to force a dead heat for second at Naas.

It’s no surprise that she took a big step forward over course and distance next time out, as the yard’s juveniles often do, and she absolutely bolted up to win by five lengths. Joseph O’Brien’s Green Empress was the well-beaten second and the form will be confirmed.

Obviously the 6f Albany Stakes at Royal Ascot was the logical next step and she ran an absolute cracker to finish second. Provided that this run hasn’t come too soon, a similar effort should be enough, although it would be dangerous to rule out more improvement.

3.55 Curragh – Thundering On

There’s a new star middle-distance filly on the scene now and the Joseph O’Brien-trained THUNDERING ON is going to be one to follow for the rest of the season. Winless in two starts as a two-year-old, it’s worth noting that she placed in Group 3 company.

This daughter of Frankel has improved with each run this term and she bolted up in the Group 3 Salsabil Stakes at Naas on her penultimate start. She had to wait for room but the race was quickly put to bed once she managed to find a bit of space.

Taking her form to a whole new level in the Oaks at Epsom earlier this month, she travelled through the race like she had stones in hand over her rivals and was utterly dominant.

Winning this race shouldn’t be beyond her if turning up in similar form this time around.
