The Chicago Cubs are getting closer to a needed rotation boost, and Matthew Boyd used a Tuesday appearance to clear up the unusual injury story that followed him into June.

Boyd has been out since sustaining a meniscus injury at home on May 6 before undergoing a minor cleanup procedure the next day. Early descriptions framed the injury as something that happened while the left-handed veteran played with his kids, creating confusion that his children had caused the setback.

Foul Territory Network shared the clarification Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter, posting video of Boyd explaining the sequence and pushing back on that version of the story.

“My kids did not take me out.”

Boyd then described what happened as he prepared to leave for the ballpark, saying his son had been playing with LEGOs on the floor.

“It was like 1 o’clock night game that evening, I was getting ready to head out of the house, and I was like, my son was playing Legos on the floor, and I was just been literally squatting down, like basically going into, like, crisscross applesauce, didn’t even get to the floor, my knee popped…”

The explanation reframed the injury as a freak movement issue, not anything caused by his children. It also came as Boyd moved closer to returning to the Cubs’ rotation.

The veteran is scheduled to make a rehab start with Triple-A Iowa on Saturday. If that outing goes well, Chicago expects to bring him back to the rotation next week.

His return matters for a Cubs pitching staff dealing with several injuries. Cade Horton is out for the season, Justin Steele remains sidelined until the second half, and Jordan Wicks has also spent time on the injured list.

The 35-year-old southpaw entered the 2026 season after a strong first year in Chicago, when he went 14-8 with a 3.21 ERA and earned his first All-Star selection. Now, the Cubs hope his next step brings clarity and needed innings.
