Cubs’ Ian Happ receives crucial injury update

The Chicago Cubs are playing the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday night. Ian Happ is dealing with a heel injury, however. Taylor McGregor shared an update on Happ’s status ahead of Wednesday’s contest.

“Ian Happ is out of the lineup for the second straight night. He’s dealing with a bruised left heal but available off the bench,” McGregor wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Injuries have been a problem for the ball club early this year. It was recently revealed that pitcher Cade Horton will miss the season due to an elbow injury. Additionally, Matthew Boyd is battling a bicep injury.

The good news is that Happ’s bruised left heel does not seem to be serious. He is not in the starting lineup on Wednesday but McGregor reported that the outfielder is available to pinch-hit if necessary.

Happ, 31, is hitting .200/.289/.550 across 10 games played so far during the 2026 MLB season. His numbers don’t jump off the page, but Happ is hitting the ball with power at a respectable level. He has already hit four home runs and two doubles in his 45 plate appearances.

Happ is also one of the best defensive outfielders in MLB. He earned four consecutive Gold Glove awards from 2022-2025. It would not be surprising to see Happ win another Gold Glove this year.

For now, he is focused on returning to full health. Assuming no setbacks occur, Happ should be able to return soon. Meanwhile, the Cubs and Rays will play at 6:40 PM EST on Wednesday night in Tampa Bay.
