Cubs’ Carson Kelly gets brutally honest after clutch home run adds to Mets’ misery

With the Chicago Cubs looking to make their presence felt in the 2026 season, there is no denying how many setbacks there have been for the team. As the Cubs are dealing with a plethora of injuries to their pitching, Saturday’s win over the New York Mets, 4-2, was a positive step for the team, as Carson Kelly spoke about the clutch home run that he hit.

It was a close game throughout as Chicago and New York were tied at one run apiece going into the bottom of the sixth inning, where Kelly would hit the three-run home run that won them the game. Kelly didn’t even start the game, pinch-hitting for Moises Ballesteros, and all it took was one pitch for the hitter to drive the ball to left-center field.

“Just get a good pitch to drive,” Kelly said about his approach, via MLB.com. “You know, I think coming off the bench, you just prepare yourself down underneath, get loose. Get the body loose, you know, read the report and just be in a good position to put a good swing on a pitch.”

Consequently, for someone who didn’t start the game, it seemed that Kelly was ready to go in his at-bat, as proven by his confidence in swinging the ball and connecting dead center to get the home run.

“You keep along with the game. I’m always watching the game, taking mental at-bats, you know, when I’m not in there and just ready to answer the call, and when it’s there,” Kelly said about staying ready, even if he doesn’t start the game, as he’s one of Chicago’s catchers.

At any rate, Kelly has been hitting a .340 batting average to go along with two home runs and 10 RBIs through 17 games this season, as the Cubs look to sweep the Mets on Sunday afternoon to earn their fifth straight win. Subsequently, it has been the exact opposite for New York, as Chicago handed them their 10th straight loss on Saturday and could get its 11th on Sunday.
