Cowboys rumors: Rival exec hits Dallas with George Pickens ‘revolt’ warning

All eyes will be on Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens this summer. Pickens made the decision to skip voluntary workouts on Wednesday. One NFL league executive warned that the situation could get worse next offseason if Pickens does not get a contract extension.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler polled league personnel executives, coaches, and scouts about the 2027 NFL offseason for a recent article. They suggested some fascinating topics that could be talking points next spring.

Naturally, the ongoing contract dispute between the Cowboys and Pickens was the first item on the list.

“Dallas is going to face a big decision because Pickens is set up to have another productive season and the receiver market has skyrocketed,” one NFL executive told ESPN. “If they tag him again without the promise of a new deal, he could revolt.”

Pickens exploded for 93 receptions, 1,429 receiving yards, and nine touchdowns during the 2025 season. Dallas slapped Pickens with the franchise tag, valued at $27.3 million, instead of giving him a long-term contract extension.

It would quite shocking if Dallas declined to make a long-term decision on Pickens again next offseason. Especially if he has another incredible season this fall.

“I’m kind of surprised it didn’t get ugly this offseason. I understand the character stuff, but he produced at a ridiculous level last year,” the executive added. “If he does it again, then he can hold their feet to the fire a little more. And they still have to be willing to hold that franchise tag number on their [2027] books, which isn’t always easy.”

But all of this speculation is predicated on Pickens repeating with another incredible season in 2026. It will be fascinating to see if Pickens lives up to his high expectations later this fall.
