Cowboys rumors: Ian Rapoport deflects George Pickens contract drama on important deadline day
The Dallas Cowboys are entering the 2026 NFL season with significant optimism about their offense, largely due to wide receiver George Pickens, who participated in mandatory minicamp despite playing under the franchise tag. Quarterback Dak Prescott expressed great excitement about having Pickens on the field, praising his unique energy and immediate impact. Prescott highlighted that Pickens’ elite route-running, awareness of leverage, and skills in creating separation make it easy to throw to him. He confidently stated that the star receiver looks physically dominant and is prepared to score touchdowns.
Despite the tension stemming from playing without a long-term contract extension, the focus surrounding Pickens remains solely on his performance. On the day of the crucial franchise tag deadline, NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport took to X to address the growing contract drama. Rapoport noted that Pickens is concentrating entirely on football, leaving the complex financial negotiations to his agent.
Pickens emphasized his dedication to the team, asserting that he prioritizes “football first” over concerns about the tag and contract details. By focusing on his preparation and minimizing business-related distractions, Pickens has helped keep the locker room united during this critical phase of the Cowboys’ offseason program.
George Pickens said at mandatory minicamp that his focus is on the field, with contract questions being handled by his agent.
“I'm here to definitely help the team. (Not thinking about) the tag and all that. It's football first. You know what I mean?" https://t.co/o2fnPpRcgW

This mature, football-first mindset makes it very unlikely that he will leave the team prematurely. Addressing speculation that the contract situation could lead Dallas to trade their star player, ESPN’s Dan Graziano dismissed the idea of a trade before the 2027 season. Graziano pointed out that the Cowboys have significant leverage and could easily apply the franchise tag on Pickens for a second consecutive year in 2027. Although a second tag would cost Dallas $32.8 million, Graziano noted that this amount is already exceeded by the salaries of six of the league’s highest-paid receivers. Even with CeeDee Lamb commanding a hefty salary, retaining Pickens is quite feasible for a front office committed to maintaining an elite, dual-threat aerial attack.
