Could former Texas Tech quarterack Brendan Sorsby be the next Terrelle Pryor? Mike Florio weighs in

Texas Tech will have a new starting quarterback in 2026, and it will not be Brendan Sorsby. Sorsby is entering his name into the NFL Supplemental Draft, hoping to continue his career at the NFL level.

As Sorsby prepares to head to the NFL, there are still questions about his future, according to Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk.

“Based on Monday’s legal developments in the Brendan Sorsby case, it became clear that he was facing a decision. A calculated risk. Do I continue to cling to my effort to play college football in 2026, knowing that I still may lose my eligibility at a time when it’s too late to jump to the NFL? He had until June 22 to apply for the Supplemental Draft, and he has. On Tuesday, he’ll dismiss his lawsuit in Luccobk County, Texas, which will make him ineligible to play college football, and eligible to enter the supplemental draft, but this isn’t over,” Florio began.

A date has not been set for the Supplemental Draft, and teams will need to be let know if Sorsby is eligible to be selected.

“The first step, will the NFL let him in? They should,” Florio continued. “Will the NFL try to punish him like they punished Terrell Pryor in 2011? They shouldn’t.”

In 2011, Terrelle Pryor was suspended by the NFL after he withdrew from Ohio State when facing a five-game suspension from the NCAA. This was in connection with receiving improper benefits from the owner of a tattoo parlor, as well as selling memorabilia.  At the time, NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell deemed it necessary to uphold the five-game suspension from the NCAA.

“In my judgment, allowing players to secure their own ineligibility for college play in order to avoid previously determined disciplinary consequences for admitted conduct reflects poorly not on college football — which acted to discipline the transgressor — but on the NFL, by making it into a sanctuary where a player cannot only avoid the consequences of his conduct, but be paid for doing so,” Goodell wrote.

Now, the former Texas Tech quarterback will wait to see his NFL fate. Meanwhile, as Florio also noted, will a team take a risk on a quarterback who is recovering from gambling addiction and could relapse? One team, the Cleveland Browns, seems to be out on drafting Sorsby, but there are still 31 other teams that could take the risk.
