Commanders stars Jayden Daniels, Terry McLaurin, Stefon Diggs will play vs. Lions

The Washington Commanders are going to give their starters some snaps during the team’s preseason game with the Detroit Lions on Saturday. Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels will play, as will wideouts Stefon Diggs and Terry McLaurin.

The news was reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Washington added Diggs this offseason, to give Daniels another weapon in the passing offense.

Washington has high hopes for this offense, heading into the 2026 NFL season. The Commanders struggled in 2025, missing the NFL Playoffs. Washington finished the season with just five wins.

One of the reasons for the struggles is because Daniels was hurt. He appeared in just seven games during the 2025 season.

The team announced 15 players won’t play vs. the Lions on Saturday. That includes veteran quarterback Marcus Mariota. Time will tell how much of a role Daniels will play, before he also sits.

“I love that he’s decisive,” Commanders head coach Dan Quinn said about Daniels this offseason, per ESPN. “He’s got a unique ability to put the ball in the right location. I like that he’s in a system that he is now at the line of scrimmage working more things. That might be the biggest difference between the last couple of years and this year is him at the line of scrimmage and working through. He’s done a good job with cadence. That’s not something that we’ve done here before. Those are a few of the things that don’t show up on the stat sheet that he’s doing a really good job with.”

Daniels is excited to play again after being away for so long.

“I felt like this last year, so I wasn’t hurt around this time last year,” Daniels said. “It’s a new year. I want to compare what I did my first two years.”

Washington is 1-0 in preseason play. The Commanders defeated the Miami Dolphins in their first game.
