Mets’ Jefry Yan hilariously does strikeout celebration on a called ball

The New York Mets lost to the Chicago White Sox on Friday, but it did not come without a bit of drama. Mets relief pitcher Jefry Yan found himself in an awkward situation for celebrating a little too early.

During the Sox clash, the left-handed rookie pitched with Colson Montgomery at bat in the ninth inning, and soon after the ball left his grip, he jumped in the air to celebrate it.

However, it did not take Yan long to realize that it was a clear ball rather than a strike three. He acknowledged that he should have waited for the call before jumping up in the air. Also, it was not the first time he celebrated a little too early.

“That’s one of those situations where it becomes a learning experience. You can’t go out there and kind of lose the goal, which is to execute the pitches. It won’t happen again. Again, the plan is to execute the pitches, and then once the job is (done), I think that you can celebrate the way that you want to,” Yan said, via SNY.

Additionally, it also attracted some reaction on social media, as fans were not pleased by the premature celebration. Reaction also came the southpaw’s way after the game, as Mets interim manager Andy Green mentioned that his player was carried away given the emotion running high during the play.

“Certainly Jefry will learn not to jump before the play is over. That’s something he’s still working through. I think the emotions of the moment got him there,” Green told the press postgame.

That said, the Dominican Republic pitcher is just months into his tenure at the NY camp. He joined the Mets on a minor league contract in August last year and got a major league call-up earlier this month.

Through seven appearances for the Mets this MLB season, Yan is 1-1 with a 4.26 ERA. The Mets play the White Sox again at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago on Saturday.
