Colts’ Daniel Jones injury return hype train leaves station with bombshell update

Indianapolis Colts quarterback Daniel Jones was having his most productive campaign when he tore his right Achilles tendon in Week 14 against the Jacksonville Jaguars.

The cruel setback practically doomed the Colts, who had an 8-2 start before spiraling in the final stretch, losing seven straight games, including the last four without Jones. Indianapolis missed the playoffs for the fifth straight year.

The 29-year-old Jones has made steady progress in his challenging rehabilitation, claiming that he would be fully ready by Week 1 in September.

According to a report from the Associated Press’ Michael Marot on Monday, Jones was cleared to participate in seven-on-seven drills. Colts coach Shane Steichen called the development “huge,” as they try to get Jones “in the fold.”

“We’ll keep that trend going, probably through the end of OTAs and then, obviously, get him into team stuff at training camp. It’s spring, we don’t play for a while, so we’ve got to be smart with his injury. But he’s making great progress,” said Steichen.

Jones, who signed a two-year, $88 million contract extension in March, logged a career-high 68.0 completion percentage last season, while throwing for 3,101 yards and 19 touchdowns—both the second-highest in his career.

Jones was optimistic when he returned to practice last week, stressing that it felt good to be back in the swing of things.

He is expected to retain his starting spot once he is ready for action, with Anthony Richardson, Riley Leonard, and Easton Stick battling for the backup role.

The Colts will open their new season against the Baltimore Ravens.
