Vikings’ JJ McCarthy dealing with possible ‘multi-week’ injury after making 53-man roster

The Minnesota Vikings have been trimming their roster down to 53 players in recent days, with quarterback JJ McCarthy among those making the cut. McCarthy recently lost the starting job to veteran Kyler Murray, but he still figures to be a valuable piece for Minnesota, potentially as a trade chip, moving forward.

Now, the team has gotten a rough injury update on the former first-round pick as the new season approaches.

“Kyler Murray is the starter and it looks like Carson Wentz is gonna be the number two.. JJ McCarthy has a sprained ankle that is a multi-week injury and they like Max Brosmer,” reported ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter during an appearance on The Pat McAfee Show, per Pat McAfee on X, formerly Twitter.

Wentz got several starts for the Vikings last year after McCarthy was dealing with a different injury, and had a mixed bag of production throughout the season for Minnesota.

The Vikings ended up missing the playoffs despite finishing the year with a winning record of 9-8, and their uncertainty at the quarterback position, fueled in large part by how poorly McCarthy played in the majority of his starts, ultimately prompted them to go out and sign Murray after he parted ways with the Cardinals this offseason.

It remains to be seen how other teams view McCarthy, and whether anyone might be willing to part with anything of note in order to take a chance on the former college national champion and 2024 first-round pick.

In any case, the Vikings are slated to get their new season underway on September 13 with a home game against the Green Bay Packers.
