Coach lays out the true difference between HBCU & Power Five football teams

After a stellar showing in the first two games of the Ted White era, Howard University is gearing up for its biggest game in program history. On Saturday, the Bison will be facing off against the defending college football national champion Indiana Hoosiers. The game comes on the backdrop of a Week 1 slate that featured several lopsided FBS versus HBCU scores, such as Arizona State’s 70-7 win over Morgan State and Georgia’s 63-3 victory over Tennessee State.

On Monday’s MEAC coaches call, Howard University head coach Ted White laid out the biggest difference between HBCU and Power Five football programs. He specifically zeroed in on the front-line disparity.

“It’s a big difference…When you talk about just the difference between, you know, HBCU lineman… and power four offensive and defensive lineman. That’s the difference. That’s the difference. And the depth wise… those guys being able to have three guys at each position deep and the HBCU’s one and and possibly two, you know. So from a depth standpoint, it is a major difference.”

However, he pushed back on the assertion that there is a huge skill gap between HBCU and Power Five football programs.

“From a skill standpoint, I wouldn’t say it’s different at all because…from a size and dimensions and everything that, you know, skilled guys that we have here at HBCU, we match up.”

White also reemphasized one of the core reasons why HBCU teams play Power Five opponents: to give their star players NFL draft buzz against tougher competition.

“What better opportunity if you wanted to go play in the National Football League to be able to go play against the best competition that has been assembled in college football.”
