Why Salt Lake City is surprisingly poised to become home to MLB’s next expansion team
Various rumors about MLB expansion have swirled over the past few years. Cities such as Nashville, Portland and Orlando have been mentioned as possible destinations for teams. Salt Lake City in Utah is also in the conversation. According to Jeff Passan of ESPN, Salt Lake City may be in one of the best positions to become home to a new MLB team.
“The city with the most compelling case for MLB expansion right now: Salt Lake City,” Passan wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “It’s got an owner. It’s got a public-private partnership to fund a stadium. And it’s got a site that’s already being developed.”
Passan spoke with Utah governor Spencer Cox about the situation as well.
“We’ve already done the thing that is the hardest part to do,” Cox told Passan. “If you look at the A’s moving to Las Vegas, the last thing they got done and thing that almost killed that deal was they couldn’t get a stadium done. We already did this, we did it a couple of years ago… The Miller Group is designing the actual stadium right now.”
Salt Lake City already has plans for a stadium. The city clearly has a desire to add an MLB team. Baseball already has a presence there, as the Salt Lake Bees are the Los Angeles Angels’ Triple-A team.
It seems as if Salt Lake City is indeed in an ideal position for MLB expansion, but it remains to be seen if they will indeed land a team. Only time will tell.
