Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian name-drops Spurs, Rockets to hype up historic Ohio State rematch

One year after a disappointing loss to Ohio State in Columbus, Texas football coach Steve Sarkisian and his Longhorns host the Buckeyes this weekend in Austin.

Texas, which blew out Texas State 59-7 on Saturday, welcomes No. 1 Ohio State to Darrell K Royal–Texas Memorial Stadium this coming Saturday in a matchup between two top-five teams. And Sarkisian is pumped up about it and the potential guests that will be roaming the sidelines for the game.

“I think it’s great for our game,” Sarkisian said during a press conference yesterday [h/t 247Sports’ Patrick Murphy]. “I’ll say this: The fact that we have ‘College GameDay’ coming back to Austin, that’s great. The fact that we’ll have, whether it’s the Spurs team, the Rockets team, how many other people on our sideline, their sideline — that’s great because these are two great teams that are going to battle and going to compete against one another. It’s awesome for the university. It’s awesome for the city of Austin. It’s awesome for college football. I mean, this will be the most-watched regular-season game, arguably, of all time in the regular season.”

Saturday’s game will be the final leg of the home-and-home to which the schools agreed. They played the first game in each team’s season opener on Aug. 30 last year, with the Buckeyes defending their home field with a 14-7 win.

During that game, quarterback Arch Manning, who had been projected as a Heisman Trophy candidate and potentially the No. 1 overall pick in the NFL draft, struggled mightily, finishing the day with 170 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception.

Sarkisian and the Texas faithful hope things will go better this weekend, and there is reason to think they will, considering Manning showed significant growth throughout the rest of last year, and, in last week’s opener, he had 305 yards and four touchdowns through the air.

Texas vs. Ohio State will kick off at approximately 6:30 p.m. CT on Saturday.
