Sidney Crosby’s latest contract update will fire up Penguins fans

Sidney Crosby signed a two-year contract extension with the Pittsburgh Penguins in September of 2024, and although he’ll be turning 40 years old when the deal expires, one of the all-time greats has no plans to hang up the skates just yet.

The three-time Stanley Cup champion provided an update on his next contract at the NHL/NHLPA player media tour in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

“Pat (Brisson)’s talking to Kyle (Dubas). It’s just a little bit more difficult at my age as far as trying to project where you’re gonna be,” Crosby said, per The Athletic’s Mark Lazerus. “I’d like to continue playing for a number of years. It’s just I don’t know what that number is. I guess your mind and body tell you that eventually.

“Right now I feel pretty good, though.”

Crosby’s game has shown no signs of slowing down this late in his career; he’s played at over a point-per-game pace in each of his 21 National Hockey League seasons, and there’s little reason to believe that will change in 2026-27.

His longevity should be studied in a lab — he remains one of the league’s elite two-way players despite a long and bruising career. He led the Penguins back to the playoffs in 2025-26, amassing 74 points in 68 games and adding another five in six Stanley Cup Playoff contests.

That’s despite battling an injury he suffered at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. Team Canada ended up getting silver after losing to the United States in the gold medal game back in February.

Crosby’s current cap hit of $8.7 million — matching his iconic jersey number — will expire at the end of this upcoming campaign, and it wouldn’t be at all surprising if he signed another one or two-year pact at a similar AAV.

Now entering his 22nd NHL season, he, along with Evgeni Malkin and Kris Letang, will look to again lead Pittsburgh back to the postseason next spring.

The Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia native is currently seventh all-time in regular-season points with 1,761. He won’t come close to Wayne Gretzky’s record of 2,857 — no one will — but he enters the season just 160 points behind Jaromir Jagr, who is second with 1,921.

If he plays two or three more years, and remains at around a point-per-game pace, he could very well reach the milestone.

The Penguins open their 2026-27 season against the Philadelphia Flyers in another Battle of Pennsylvania on Sept. 30.
