Cardinals rumors: Will St. Louis trade Dustin May despite being in playoff contention?

The St. Louis Cardinals have had a surprisingly good season so far. That doesn’t mean though the team isn’t willing to trade away players. A new report addresses a long-standing rumor that the team is going to part ways with starting pitcher Dustin May, ahead of the trade deadline.

“St. Louis’ strong first half has made it more of a question whether the team will end up moving May. However, if the team starts to fade before the Trade Deadline, we expect the right-hander to be dealt as president of baseball operations Chaim Bloom continues to lay the groundwork for the future in his first year at the helm,” MLB.com reported.

May has been a pretty strong piece of the St. Louis rotation this season, after the team dealt Sonny Gray ahead of the campaign. He has posted 15 starts this year for St. Louis.

“The 28-year-old May gave up six runs his last time out, but he had a 2.54 ERA and a 2.69 FIP in the 12 starts before that,” the outlet added.

The Cardinals weren’t expected to have a strong campaign by many analysts. St. Louis dealt Gray, Willson Contreras, Brendan Donovan and Nolan Arenado before the season. St. Louis was expected to rely on their young players moving forward.

That has certainly been the case, as young sluggers like JJ Wetherholt have helped to steer the RedBirds. Heading into Saturday, the Cardinals are third in the National League Central with a 42-37 record.

St. Louis hosts the Miami Marlins on Saturday night. The Cardinals have dropped six of their last 10 games.

The Major League Baseball trade deadline is on August 3.
