Cardinals’ perfect trade offer for Tigers’ Tarik Skubal

The Detroit Tigers’ ace Tarik Skubal has gone from a slow simmer to a full boil on the rumor mill. With the Tigers sitting at a dismal 22-36 record and sinking fast in the AL Central standings, the question is no longer if Detroit will trade their two-time Cy Young Award winner, it’s when, and for what. The St. Louis Cardinals, armed with one of baseball’s deepest farm systems, may have just the right package to pull off the blockbuster of the summer.

Why the Tigers Have No Choice

Skubal is entering the final year of his contract, having been awarded a record $32 million arbitration salary for 2026. His future in Detroit was already murky before the season began, as extension talks reportedly stalled with a massive gap between both sides. Then came the early May surgery to remove bone fragments from his left elbow, a procedure that placed him on the injured list and further clouded his trade value and return timeline.

Despite the injury, Skubal was dominant during his seven starts before going under the knife, posting a 3-2 record, a 2.70 ERA, and a razor-thin 0.946 WHIP with 45 strikeouts in 43.1 innings. That’s the pedigree of a frontline ace who would instantly elevate any contender’s rotation. The Tigers, currently 10 games back in the AL Central and five games out of the Wild Card, are realistically approaching sell-off territory.

Several MLB executives have already weighed in, with one NL executive stating bluntly: “I would think they try to move him at the deadline if they are this far out of contention. They know they are not going to sign him, so you have to do what’s best for the organization.”

The Perfect Trade: Cijntje, Clarke, and Peete for Skubal

Here’s the deal that makes sense for both sides:

Cardinals receive:

  • LHP Tarik Skubal

Tigers receive:

  • SHP Jurrangelo Cijntje
  • LHP Brandon Clarke
  • OF Tai Peete

This package is headlined by Jurrangelo Cijntje, one of the most unique and intriguing pitching prospects in all of baseball. The 22-year-old switch-pitcher, literally capable of throwing from both the left and right side of the rubber, is currently the Cardinals’ No. 4 prospect and MLB’s No. 87 overall prospect. After arriving in a three-team trade from Seattle this offseason, Cijntje has steadily improved, posting a 4.50 ERA in May after a rocky April debut at Double-A Springfield, with 29 strikeouts in 20 innings during the month. His rare dual-arm ability and strikeout upside make him a dream developmental project for any pitching-starved organization.

The second arm in the package is Brandon Clarke, a 6-foot-4 left-hander with a fastball that touches triple digits and a wipeout slider that generates an eye-popping 63% swing-and-miss rate. Clarke, ranked sixth in the Cardinals system by The Cardinal Nation, is currently on the 60-day injured list recovering from January shoulder surgery and is expected to return later this summer. His upside alone, scouts have compared his stuff to a young Alex Reyes, makes him one of the more electric arms in the minors when healthy.

Rounding out the offer is Tai Peete, the toolsy 20-year-old center fielder acquired from the Mariners in the same blockbuster that brought Cijntje to St. Louis. Peete is a first-round pedigree player (2023 Mariners pick) who has electrified High-A Peoria when healthy, slashing .278/.355/.537 with a 121 wRC+ and even hitting for the cycle earlier this season. His blend of power, speed, and athleticism gives Detroit a projectable outfield anchor for years to come, even as his strikeout rate (31.9%) remains a developmental concern.

For Detroit, this package checks every box: an immediate-impact arm who could headline a rebuilt rotation, a power southpaw with legitimate front-of-rotation potential, and a premium position prospect whose five-tool ceiling gives the organization an exciting name to build around in the outfield. For St. Louis, the cost is real but manageable, the Cardinals ranked eighth in prospect rankings in the May update, and none of Wetherholt, Doyle, Rodriguez, or Baez are included in this offer.

Skubal’s injury recovery is progressing faster than expected, he reportedly had an encouraging bullpen session just 15 days post-surgery, meaning the Cardinals could be adding a legitimate No. 1 starter down the stretch and into a potential October run. In a National League that remains wide open, a healthy Tarik Skubal wearing a Cardinals uniform could be exactly what it takes to make a deep postseason push.

The price is steep. But for a front office committed to winning now and later, this is the deal that makes St. Louis the most dangerous team at the deadline.
