Canadiens’ Nick Suzuki reveals message to Jakub Dobes before comeback

The Montreal Canadiens are one win away from the Eastern Conference Finals after their win on Thursday night. The Canadiens defeated the Buffalo Sabres 6-3 in Game 5 thanks in part to Nick Suzuki and Jakub Dobes. However, it was a bit cagey after the first period.

The Sabres opened the scoring off a Jason Zucker deflection. This sparked a chaotic first period of play where Buffalo and Montreal traded goals. The first period ended with the Sabres leading 3-2. But Suzuki and his teammates never lost faith in their goaltender. Nor did they blame Dobes for the issues that plagued them in the opening frame.

“Just gave him a little tap showing him that we’re with him and it’s not his fault we’re losing the game. He’s bailed us out so many times this playoff run… it felt good to keep going & get that for him,” Suzuki said of the message he gave Dobes on Thursday, via Canadiens reporter Priyanta Emrith.

The Canadiens found their game in the second period, much like they did in Game 3. They scored three goals to silence the Buffalo crowd and give themselves a 5-3 lead entering the intermission. In the third, Ivan Demidov scored his first goal of the playoffs to put the game on ice.

Montreal can advance to the final four for the first time since 2021. And it would mark their first Conference Finals appearance since 2014. There is a lot riding on Game 6 for the Canadiens. It will certainly be interesting to see how they respond on Saturday night in front of their home fans.
