BYU basketball’s AJ Dybantsa sounds off on big market debate before NBA Draft
The NBA Draft lottery is set to take place on Sunday afternoon, with teams around the league praying they will be lucky enough to select number one overall. While there is not yet a consensus number one pick in this upcoming draft, many have projected that the honor will go to BYU standout freshman AJ Dybantsa, who had a monster first season in college this year.
Recently, Dybantsa weighed in on how important playing in a big market is, or in this case, is not, for him heading into the NBA.
“Obviously being from Brockton, I’m not really from a big market,” Dybantsa said, per Jason Jones of The Athletic. “I’ve created my own path and my team. My parents have been doing a great job of just putting me out there. So, I’ve been in the spotlight for a long time.”
Market size has arguably never mattered less in the NBA than it does today, thanks to the prevalence of social media and the overall globalization of the game, giving teams and players plenty of visibility regardless of where they play. One need look no further than the Oklahoma City Thunder, who are gunning for a second straight championship in the ongoing NBA playoffs, to see the prevalence of small market franchises around the league today.
Dybantsa has not yet declared for the NBA Draft, but the expectation is that he will do so at some point in the near future, especially as he continues to be viewed by many as the likely number one overall pick in what has been called the deepest draft class in years.
In any case, Dybantsa will find out his potential landing spot when the draft lottery gets underway on Sunday at 3:00 pm ET.
