Bulls to interview ex-Knicks associate head coach
Chicago Bulls fans have been beaten down for the last decade-plus, but if they can look beyond the misery, they might see a ray of hope hiding behind all the dark clouds that hang above the United Center. The organization owns the No. 4 overall selection in the NBA Draft and will have the opportunity to pair a game-changing prospect with promising talents Josh Giddey and Matas Buzelis. The right head coach can build something with that core. Perhaps Johnnie Bryant is that man.
Chicago has received permission from the Cleveland Cavaliers to interview the 12-year NBA assistant for its HC position, per ESPN’s Marc J. Spears. Bryant currently serves as the Cavs associate head coach under Kenny Atkinson and occupied the same role with the Tom Thibodeau-led New York Knicks from 2020-24.
The Oakland, California native enjoyed a solid run at the University of Utah and then later got his big coaching break with the Utah Jazz in 2014. He is only 40 years of age, which could appeal to a franchise that is feverishly searching for a burst of energy.
Despite an embarrassing performance versus the Knicks, Cleveland upset the top-seeded Detroit Pistons and advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2018. New York ended a lengthy run of painful irrelevance and reestablished itself as a perennial playoff contender during the 2020s. Bryant was on the bench for both of these revivals. But can he be the one to lead the turnaround?
Perhaps the Bulls will find out. They have the chance to thoroughly evaluate this intriguing candidate in the near future.
