Bucks’ Doc Rivers sees writing on wall with Giannis Antetokounmpo

The Milwaukee Bucks have just one game to go in the 2025-26 season, which has seen Giannis Antetokounmpo miss a plethora of games as trade rumors swirl around the franchise. Recently, a further rift has been reported regarding Antetokounmpo’s apparent desire to get back on the floor to finish the season, which the Bucks have repeatedly shut down, and some have wondered whether a divorce could finally be in the cards this summer.

Recently, Bucks head coach Doc Rivers, who is also rumored to be in his last days with the franchise, got 100% real on the situation Antetokounmpo finds himself in heading into this offseason.

“…clearly we have to do a better job here with our roster to make that even look like a possibility. And if we can’t do that, then he’s going to look outward. And so I think that’s a two-fold answer. I think one, if we had all the pieces here, I have no doubt he’d want to stay here. But we don’t. And so that puts him in a tough spot,” said Rivers, per the Dan Patrick Show, via Hoopshype.

Even heading into this season, many were lamenting the Bucks’ horrid roster-building around Giannis, which saw the team stretch and waive Damian Lillard’s contract in order to sign Myles Turner to what might very well be the worst contract in the NBA today.

At this point, it would seem that the Bucks’ only avenue toward saving the situation would be to luck into a premier draft lottery pick, although they will be getting their own selection and that of the New Orleans Pelicans.

If that doesn’t happen, this summer could finally see an era that has been on its last legs seemingly for years now come to an end.
