Buccaneers’ Baker Mayfield calls out Tampa Bay after sloppy Jaguars joint practice

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are participating in joint practices against the Jacksonville Jaguars ahead of their preseason matchup. However, Baker Mayfield doesn’t think his team played up to their standards on Tuesday.

“[The Jaguars] were playing with their hair on fire,” Mayfield said. “If this was a full-game I definitely don’t think we would have come out on the winning side of it. It was eye-opening and we need to go back and watch the tape.”

While Mayfield is happy with how the team has developed and learned during training camp, at the end of the day, football is a physical sport, and that was lacking against Jacksonville.

“I feel like we are in a good spot with the understanding of the system, the checks, what we are trying to get done, and now it is just strictly about execution and physicality,” Mayfield said. “That’s the part today that we were lacking. I don’t think that anybody is too far behind when it comes to the knowledge of what we are trying to get done, which is great; that is what you want at this point in camp, but also, when you have that down, the execution needs to be there.”

The good news is that the Buccaneers aren’t known as a soft team. Mayfield, in particular, always plays with a chip on his shoulder and is perhaps more willing to play with physicality than any other quarterback in the NFL. That is especially true with the QB playing for a new contract this year, and he will surely set the tone after this eye-opening practice against the Jaguars.
