Brutal Uruguay blunder puts Spain up 1-0 in World Cup match

Spain broke the deadlock as Uruguay committed a critical error that allowed the former to take the lead at halftime during Matchday 3 of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Friday night.

Going into the matchup, both teams needed points to secure their respective places in the knockout stage. Spain had four points after drawing 0-0 with Cape Verde and routing Saudi Arabia 4-0. As for Uruguay, they picked up two points after drawing Saudi Arabia 1-1 and Cape Verde 2-2.

All Spain needs was a draw or win to finish first place in the group standings. On the other side, Uruguay needs a win to remain alive in the World Cup. Anything less will automatically eliminate them from the tournament.

Misfortune struck Uruguay in the 42nd minute. Spain moved the ball around as Alex Baena ended up being the one taking the shot. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera got his hands on the ball but was unable to secure it as it bounced off him and continued going to the back of the net for Spain’s first score of the match.
