Browns’ Todd Monken keeps it cryptic on Deshaun Watson vs. Shedeur Sanders
The dynamic between Cleveland Browns quarterback Shedeur Sanders and his father, Deion Sanders, has garnered external attention.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer recently suggested that Deion should take a step back to allow Shedeur to carve out his own path with the new coaching staff.
Breer argued that an unmediated relationship with offensive coordinator Todd Monken would greatly benefit the young signal-caller, especially after Deion vigorously defended Shedeur’s rookie year against critical media narratives.
This situation unfolds during a highly competitive offseason.
According to Pro Football Talk, the Browns began their Organized Team Activities (OTAs) this week; however, the shift to on-field practice hasn’t changed their ambiguous approach to the quarterback competition.
During Wednesday’s practice, Deshaun Watson and Shedeur Sanders took turns leading different periods.
Monken remained noncommittal, stating, “Nothing’s really changed. We’re gonna rotate those guys and play the best player. We’ll see.”
While Monken acknowledged Watson’s athleticism and noted that Sanders has “come miles” in understanding offensive concepts, he did not reveal any clear preferences.
Although Monken hopes to name a definitive starting quarterback by the end of spring, he admitted that “you can’t guarantee that” will happen.
Despite the fluidity of the depth chart, Deion Sanders insists that his son possesses unique resilience.
In an interview on YouTube’s “The Barbershop,” Coach Prime stated that Shedeur “went through hell” but persevered, dismissing pre-draft rumors, such as allegations that Shedeur wore headphones during meetings, as complete fabrications.
Drafted 144th overall in 2025, Shedeur threw for 1,400 yards and seven touchdowns during a challenging 3-4 rookie season. Deion noted that his son has spiritually matured and embraced the process along the way.
