Browns’ Andrew Berry provides reality check on only engaging Rams on Myles Garrett trade
With the Cleveland Browns trading star Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams, some are bashing the return for the effective pass rusher. As Browns general manager Andrew Berry made the trade for Garrett, he would answer the report on the Rams being the only team that the franchise considered dealing the star to.
Berry would be asked why Cleveland didn’t open the bidding for the defensive end with the hopes of getting a few more picks out of it, leading to the general manager saying that “not every team can afford” a player like Garrett. Consequently, Cleveland ended up getting defensive end Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round draft pick, a 2028 second-round pick, and a 2029 third-round pick.
“That wasn’t the goal of Myles…if we were to trade Myles, it’s a very narrow universe of deals that satisfy it. You know, everyone wants to have a Myles Garrett on their team, but you know, not everyone can afford that acquisition costs, in terms of players, picks, and dollars, and so, yeah, that was not the intent of any of it,” Berry said to the media on Tuesday.

Andrew Berry on why the Browns traded Myles Garrett
There’s no denying that the Rams got themselves a superstar defensive player in Garrett, who, in his last season with the Browns, recorded a history-making 23 sacks. Berry went into the several ways that the team would ever trade Garrett, which this recent deal checked all the boxes.
“No. 1, it would have to have short-and long-term benefits. No. 2, as part of the trade, a young, cost-controlled star at a premium position would have to be included. And the third piece is that there would have to be premium draft capital. And there’s a very small set of deals that really satisfy those constraints. So, when it got to the point with our negotiations with the Rams, when all those things were satisfied, it really caused us to take a step back and really think about the decision,” Berry said, via News 5 Cleveland.
At any rate, it remains to be seen how Cleveland will try to replace Garrett.
