Brian Windhorst names key to an NBA Finals win, and it’s not Victor Wembanyama

On the latest edition of ESPN’s NBA Today, Brian Windhorst spoke about what it’ll take for the Spurs to get a crucial game victory to tie the series. While Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is widely considered the best player on the team, Windhorst believes that the true key to victory is a standout performance from Stephon Castle.

Windhorst used the context of Game 3 to point to why Castle will be an important key piece for the Spurs.

“I think one of the most important things that happened in game three was 16 points in the paint for the Spurs in the first quarter. Yeah. And yes, we will all see the Wembanyama dunk, ’cause that’s what you remember. But it was Steph Castle who was applying pressure, as Perk says, getting two feet into the paint and then distributing it out. That same mentality. If they’re gonna win three in a row it’s gonna be because he’s continuing to do that.”

Stephon Castle did indeed have a stellar game three performance. He finished the game with 23 points, five rebounds, five assists, one steal, and one block, along with two made 3-pointers and 38 minutes of play in a key performance that helped San Antonio secure the victory. Castle’s play in Game 3 was his best outing of the series, as he finished with 17 points and 8 rebounds in Game 1 and 14 points and 4 rebounds in Game 2.

The San Antonio Spurs look to duplicate their success in Game 4 of the NBA Finals tonight and force a pivotal Game 5 back in San Antonio.
