Brewers are positioned for Tarik Skubal trade, but there’s a catch

The Tarik Skubal sweepstakes continues to intensify ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. The Chicago Cubs are a top landing spot as of Wednesday. But the Milwaukee Brewers are surfacing as one more prime destination for the Detroit Tigers star.

MLB insider for The Athletic Ken Rosenthal dropped new intel on Milwaukee’s sudden interest. However, there’s a catch as he points out.

“They [the Brewers] are doing a tremendous job of developing young players and bringing them into the major leagues. But while Skubal is extremely unlikely for them, they have the prospects to do it,” Rosenthal said.

Another words Milwaukee will need to dump one of its young up-and-comers on the mound to sweeten this deal. Rosenthal adds the Brewers need to take on his remaining $10 million deal too.

“I don’t believe they would do that. But they are positioned to do the same kind of trade with [C.C.] Sabathia in 2008,” Rosenthal said while adding how Sabathia was a “rental” pitcher like Skubal.

Skubal rises as the hottest name on the pitching trade market. Although Freddy Peralta of the New York Mets is one more red-hot name available too.

Skubal’s next team gains a past two-time Cy Young winner. The Cubs stand as the most intriguing spot due to Tigers general manager Scott Harris having past ties to the franchise. Plus remains connected with Cubs president Jed Hoyer.

The 29-year-old hasn’t thrown heat on the mound since April 29; striking out seven but surrendering five hits against the Atlanta Braves. He sustained an MLB Injury to his elbow that’s kept him out.
