Brett Yormark breaks silence on Texas Tech’s Brendan Sorsby reinstatement

An injunction given by a judge today gives Texas Tech quarterback Brendan Sorsby back his eligibility. While Texas Tech and Sorsby have celebrated the injunction, not everyone is thrilled.

Now, Big 12 Commissioner Brett Yormark can be added to the list of people upset about the ruling on Monday, according to Brett McMurphy of On3.

“The ramifications of today’s ruling are significant and could have broad impacts across college athletics, creating great concern amongst our membership. I’ve been consulting with our key stakeholders and have scheduled meetings with our Conference ADs and Executive Board this week. We are also in touch with Charlie Baker and anticipate the NCAA to appeal the order in the next 24-48 hours. We will continue to monitor and evaluate the situation,” the statement from Yormark read.

Sorsby sued the NCAA for a chance to play for Texas Tech this coming fall, after allegations came to light that he placed thousands of bets, including some on his own team. The injunction ruling today allows Sorsby to play in 2026 for Texas Tech, but he will need to serve a two-game suspension. This means he will miss the first two games against Abilene Christian and Oregon State. He will then be making his Texas Tech debut on September 18 against Houston at home in a conference game.

The Big 12 Commissioner is not the only one who is upset with the ruling in the conference. Other Big 12 ADs have also expressed their displeasure over the Sorsby ruling. In the meantime, as ADs and coaches weigh in on the ruling, the NCAA will be planning its next steps in the case.
