Breaking down De’Aaron Fox’s worst 13 seconds in NBA history
The San Antonio Spurs had an all-time NBA Finals meltdown in Game 4 against the New York Knicks, as they blew a 29-point lead and went down 3-1 in the series. After an almost perfect first half, the Spurs came out after halftime and didn’t have that same fire in their game. By the time the fourth quarter arrived, it felt like they had lost all momentum, and the Knicks continued to break down the door.
The final seconds of the game were probably the most devastating, and it’s De’Aaron Fox who’s receiving most of the blame right now.
With about 13 seconds left, Fox ran for the loose ball, and instead of dribbling it out with a one-point lead, he went up for the layup and had it blocked by OG Anunoby. The Knicks recovered the ball, and Fox then fouled Jose Alvarado at halfcourt, which he probably shouldn’t have done since the Spurs’ defense was set.
On the Knicks’ next possession, he went to double Jalen Brunson, who shot the ball and missed, but that left Anunoby open to go to the paint and get the tip-in.
Unfortunately, Fox had several other mistakes in the fourth, but those last final seconds is probably what did the Spurs in. After the game, he was asked about the layup, and he noted that he wanted to put the team up three points.
“I just thought I’d be able to outrun him,” Fox said. “That’s it.”
Now, the Spurs have to go into Game 5 with a bad taste in their mouths, but they’ll need a short memory if they want a chance of keeping the series alive. With the way that Game 4 went, it’s hard to see how to not think about that for some time.
For Fox, he definitely has to find a way to move on from that rough fourth quarter.
