Braves acquire Lane Thomas, Bailey Falter in trade with Royals

The Atlanta Braves rearranged their roster before facing the Washington Nationals Saturday. But then took a big swing at adding offensive firepower ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline. Lane Thomas and Bailey Falter are now on board via the Kansas City Royals.

ESPN MLB insider Jeff Passan delivered the trade update via the social media website X, formerly Twitter. This move even arrives as manager Walt Weiss coached an 8-3 lead during the top of the ninth inning.

Yet the move further boosts the offense moving forward. Thomas blasted 10 home runs and drove 37 runners home while in Kansas City. The 30-year-old lands on his fifth different MLB franchise. But he ends a truncated run with the Royals, lasting 96 games.

Bailey Falter comes into the picture a year younger than Thomas. But adds an extra southpaw on the hill. He’s 0-2 as a starter this season while allowing 24 total hits. He’s struck out just six batters in 2026. Falter fanned 97 batters back in 2024 while with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

So Falter arrives as a fellow MLB journeyman too. Except he’s played for only three franchises including the Royals. He launched his career with the Philadelphia Phillies first in 2021, striking out 34 batters and going 2-1 on the hill. Now he’ll hand fellow left-hander Chris Sale some needed help in this postseason push.

Atlanta pulls off both moves while sitting atop the National League East standings at 67-45 overall. The Braves remain two games behind the National League leading Los Angeles Dodgers for the best record in baseball. But also trail the Milwaukee Brewers (68-41) in the race for the NL’s top seed.
