Chiefs’ Andy Reid provides huge Patrick Mahomes training camp update

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes went down with a torn ACL during Week 15 last season, immediately throwing his 2026 campaign into jeopardy. With that being said, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid had some encouraging news on the star quarterback in a post-practice interview from training camp with ESPN’s Dan Graziano.

“He’s doing a great job,” said Reid, “he’s really doing everything that he normally does, and doing it well. We’re happy with that; we know he’s still progressing through it, but he sure looks sharp out here.”

This will sound like music to Chiefs fans’ ears, especially given the fact that Mahomes has publicly acknowledged his goal of returning for Week 1 against their AFC West rival Denver Broncos. Despite the optimism from Mahomes and the encouraging updates from Reid, the legendary head coach was far from committing to number 15 being under center when the regular season begins.

When asked by Graziano if Mahomes will see the field in the preseason, Reid wouldn’t say definitively.

“I don’t know about that,” Reid noted. “I’ve got to see how that goes. I’m listening to the doctors, Dan.”

Whether it be Week 1 or the preseason, there is clearly not too much to be said yet on when Mahomes will return to the gridiron. Still, it is very encouraging to see his progress not even a full eight months after the injury.

Knowing the magic that Mahomes has shown already in his NFL career, it would come as no surprise if he was ready to go come kickoff on September 14th versus the Broncos.
