Howard, North Carolina A&T top HBCUs per Forbes

Howard University and North Carolina A&T have been recognized as the top private and public HBCUs, respectively, in Forbes’ latest rankings of historically Black colleges and universities. The list was the first that the publication has done.

Forbes divided its rankings into separate lists for private and public HBCUs rather than producing one overall ranking. Howard claimed the No. 1 spot among private institutions. Spelman College, Morehouse College, Xavier University of Louisiana and Hampton University rounded out the top five. Tuskegee University, Fisk University, Talladega College, Clark Atlanta University and Tougaloo College completed the private top 10.

Among public HBCUs, North Carolina A&T earned the top ranking. Florida A&M finished second, followed by Prairie View A&M, Morgan State University and the University of the Virgin Islands. Tennessee State, Bowie State, Winston-Salem State, Elizabeth City State and Delaware State rounded out the public top 10.

According to HBCU Gameday, the Forbes rankings are largely based on student outcomes and return on investment. The publication evaluates institutions using factors such as graduation and retention rates, alumni earnings and student debt. Schools also receive additional consideration for the success of students who receive federal Pell Grants.
