Bob Nightengale itching for Tarik Skubal to go on trade block after latest disaster
A tough season just keeps getting worse for the Detroit Tigers. Detroit lost a game to the Baltimore Orioles on Sunday, and USA Today columnist Bob Nightengale has had enough. Nightengale is essentially calling for the team to trade starting pitcher Tarik Skubal.
“Yet another gut-punch for the Detroit Tigers who blow 9th-inning lead to the Baltimore Orioles and lose 5-3 on a walk off. That’s 8 losses in a row. That’s 16 losses in the last 18 games,” Nightengale posted to X, formerly Twitter. “That’s 1 step closer to putting Tarik Skubal on the trade block.”
The Tigers are now 20-33 on the year. Skubal is out with an injury, and Detroit has simply not been able to post the wins needed to compete since.
“The Tigers have lost 14 of 16 games since Skubal’s arthroscopic elbow surgery, and have dropped out of sight in the AL Central race. Their offense has been putrid, scoring three or fewer runs in seven consecutive games, and more than four runs once since May 3,” Nightengale wrote in his weekly column on Sunday.
Skubal is the subject of all sorts of trade rumors. Nightengale made light of that fact in his weekly column. He believes that only four teams can afford Skubal right now.
“The Los Angeles Dodgers, New York Yankees, Toronto Blue Jays and San Diego Padres,” Nightengale wrote.
Time will tell what happens to the ace. He has been working hard to return to the team, while throwing bullpen sessions.
“His velocity was as high as it’s been since his throwing started,” Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said about the latest session, per the Associated Press. “He sat down and came back and did like a simulated second inning. That’s encouraging and it’s full stuff.”
Detroit is playing the Orioles again on Sunday in a doubleheader.
