Blue Jays’ Max Scherzer could make injury rehab start ‘fairly quickly’
The Toronto Blue Jays placed Max Scherzer on the 15-day IL in late April as he’s dealing with injuries in his right forearm and left ankle. About a month later, it appears he is finally nearing his first start for his rehab assignment, as Scherzer works his way back from the injuries.
Manager John Schneider claimed that the 41-year-old right-hander is nearing his first game to begin his rehab assignment, according to Mitch Bannon of The Athletic. When that start will be is currently unknown, but the Blue Jays will likely announce it once the decision is made.
“Feeling good, cross off today, then get him into a rehab game fairly quickly,” said Schneider about Scherzer. “I just got to talk with him.”
While beginning his rehab assignment is good news for Max Scherzer, the three-time Cy Young Award winner has had a rough start to his 19th MLB season. In his five appearances on the mound this year, Max Scherzer owns a career-worst 9.65 ERA and 1.607 WHIP with 10 strikeouts through 18.2 innings pitched.
It’s been ugly, to say the least. The good news is that numbers can be massively inflated for pitchers early in a season. That very well could just be the case for Scherzer, but he needs more playing time to potentially bounce back in the 2026 campaign. Even if the eight-time All-Star brings his ERA down to just 5.00, that would be a drastic improvement compared to his first five starts this season.
While Max Scherzer continues to work his way back from injury, the Blue Jays will rely on a starting rotation consisting of Kevin Gausman, Patrick Corbin, and Trey Yesavage. With Dylan Cease recently being placed on the 15-day IL, John Schneider will have to get creative to fill the gap for the remaining two spots in the rotation for now.
