Blue Jays make huge George Springer decision for Rays game after injury scare
The Toronto Blue Jays are counting on George Springer to be a key contributor at the top of their lineup. However, Toronto has been without his services their past two games.
On Tuesday though, Springer made his return to the Blue Jays’ lineup. He is in the leadoff spot and will operate as the designated hitter, via Mitch Bannon of The Athletic.
Springer previously spent time on the injured list after fracturing his toe. Then, he hit a foul ball off of the same toe, forcing his two-game absence. While he won’t be in the field, Springer is now feeling healthy enough to at least contribute in the batter’s box. The Blue Jays will surely be paying close attention, as the last thing they want is Springer to further aggravate his toe.
Over his first 18 games in 2o26, the outfielder/DH is hitting .212 with two home runs, seven RBIs and a stolen bases. Perhaps his slow start can be attributed to his nagging toe injury. Still, the Blue Jays will be expecting more from Springer throughout the full campaign.
Outside of injuries, he has given Toronto no reason to doubt his abilities. Over his six years with the franchise, Springer is hitting .261 with 121 home runs, 345 RBIs and 73 stolen bases.
Battling in the daunting AL East, the Blue Jays know they’ll need to be at the top of their game. At 16-19, they sit eight games behind the New York Yankees for the top spot. As Toronto tries to turn things around, they’ll hope Springer’s return provides a spark.
