Blue Jays agree to reunion with veteran slugger
The Toronto Blue Jays and veteran slugger Eloy Jimenez are reportedly in agreement on a contract, Mitch Bannon of The Athletic reports. Jimenez initially agreed to a minor league contract with the Blue Jays during the 2025 season. He entered free agency during the offseason but re-signed with the Blue Jays before the 2026 campaign. He appeared in 12 MLB games with Toronto before getting designated for assignment and ultimately electing free agency.
Now, Jimenez is back with the Blue Jays.
The 29-year-old performed well in his limited action with Toronto. He recorded a strong .290/343/.290 slash line across 35 total plate appearances.
There was a time when Jimenez was expected to become a future superstar. He finished fourth in American League Rookie of the Year voting in 2019 with the Chicago White Sox. In 2020, Jimenez earned a Silver Slugger Award.
Jimenez has been limited by injuries during his career, though. He has not performed up to his potential. With that being said, Jimenez features some of the best power in the game. If he can stay on the field and is given a consistent opportunity, Jimenez could give the Blue Jays’ lineup a crucial boost.
The Blue Jays could use the help. The ball club is currently just 23-27 overall this season. They are in third place in the American League East standings. Toronto is 11 games behind the Tampa Bay Rays for first place in the division.
On Friday, the Blue Jays will begin a three-game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates at home. First pitch for Friday night’s game is scheduled for 7:07 PM EST.
