Billy Goat curse may be back as Cubs’ losing streak hits 10

Back on the 15th of May, the Chicago Cubs were sitting pretty atop the NL Central standings. They moved to 29-16 on the season after scoring a 10-5 win over their archrival, the Chicago White Sox. However, things can change rather quickly in MLB. There are games to be played every single day, and everything can come crashing down in a hurry.

The Cubs, since that aforementioned fateful day, have lost 10 games in a row — falling to 29-26 on the season. On Tuesday, their latest defeat came in rather backbreaking fashion, as the Pittsburgh Pirates demolished them to the tune of a 12-1 defeat. They have now fallen all the way down to fifth place in the division, and this downfall of theirs came within the span of 11 days, fueling the notion that the iconic Billy Goat curse might be back.

For the uninitiated, the Billy Goat curse lasted for 71 years, from 1945 to 2016. This originated from Billy Goat Tavern owner William Sianis, who was unceremoniously asked to leave Game 4 of the World Series after many believed that he and his pet goat, named Murphy, was causing a ruckus. After leaving, Sianis infamously declared that the Cubs would not win anymore. They didn’t for over seven decades.

It’s not quite clear if the Cubs kicked out any one of their fans over the past 11 days or if someone put a hex on the team. But one thing’s for sure, it’s going to take some magic to bring the good vibes back into the team. There is a rot that tends to fester whenever a slump of this magnitude happens, and their mettle is going to be tested from here on out.

The good news is that there is a ton of time left on the season, so the Cubs should have plenty of room still to get it together amid a horrific skid.
