Bears’ Ben Johnson still has ‘hopeful’ Luther Burden III update despite groin injury
Chicago Bears wide receiver Luther Burden III sustained a groin injury at training camp. While his timeline remains a bit unclear, head coach Ben Johnson at least sheds a positive light on the situation.
Johnson claimed that the Bears are remaining optimistic that the 22-year-old wideout will be ready to play by the Week 1 opener against the Carolina Panthers on the road, according to Courtney Cronin of ESPN. Chicago also received an injury update regarding Ozzy Trapilo in Tuesday’s report.
“Two more injury updates from Ben Johnson: Luther Burden is going to ‘hopefully’ be ready by the start of the season,” Cronin reported. “Ozzy Trapilo, who is recovering from a patellar tendon rupture, is still on PUP and ‘hitting his hurdles’ and could be back by the end of training camp.”
Burden suffered the injury on Saturday, August 8, during a one-on-one red zone drill. It’s said that the former second-round pick and collided with cornerback Tyrique Stevenson during the practice rep.
Expectations are high for Luther Burden III, as he aims to play a vital role in the offense this coming season. The Bears traded wide receiver DJ Moore to the Buffalo Bills this offseason, creating more opportunities for Burden. However, the injury causes concern, as there is still no true timetable for return, despite Ben Johnson expressing optimism.
Burden played 15 games as a rookie (five starts) for the Bears. He finished his first NFL season with 47 receptions for 652 yards and two touchdowns. He also returned eight kicks on special teams, accumulating 223 return yards.
