Bayern Munich have another treble in their sights. 

Jupp Heynckes’ Bayern team won three trophies in 2012/13 and the current side is now aiming to follow suit.

Last week saw Vincent Kompany’s crew advance to the semi-finals of the Champions League courtesy of a 6-4 aggregate victory over Real Madrid in the last eight.

On Sunday, Bayern wrapped up the Bundesliga title by beating Stuttgart 4-2, capitalising on Borussia Dortmund’s loss to Hoffenheim the previous day.

And on Wednesday they have the chance to book their place in the final of the DFB-Pokal, where either Stuttgart or Freiburg await.

Bayern have been champions-elect for months now, and it was only a matter of time before they got over the line in what could only generously be described as a title race.

Kompany will nonetheless have been pleased to see his side claim the crown with four league games left to spare, allowing him and his players to focus on the two other trophies Bayern are targeting.

Although Bayern will take some stopping on the continent, the DFB-Pokal is patently the easier tournament to win. Bayer Leverkusen are out to stop the Bavarians in the last four, where they are underdogs despite their home advantage.

Leverkusen lost 2-1 at home to Augsburg at the weekend, damaging their chances of Champions League qualification. They are now sixth in the standings, behind RB Leipzig, Stuttgart and Hoffenheim.

Leverkusen are the last side to deny Bayern victory in any competition, but Kompany’s charges should come through their trip to the BayArena unscathed.

Bayern should have too much

Bayern Munich have been too strong for virtually everyone in German football this season.

Four draws and a defeat in the Bundesliga show Bayern have not been flawless, but they have also taken 28 points from the last 30 available.

Bayer Leverkusen were the only team to deny them in that run, so Kasper Hjulmand’s charges are capable of giving the champions something to think about.

But while we would not be surprised to see Leverkusen score, Bayern are likely to come out on top.

Bayer Leverkusen are unusual in that they have scored more goals in the first half of Bundesliga matches than the second.

There have been a league-high 60 goals from minutes one to 45 in Leverkusen’s league games this term.

With 59 goals, Bayern Munich’s matches are not far behind Leverkusen’s total, so there is a good chance we will be treated to an entertaining encounter on Wednesday.

There is a distinct possibility we will see at least two goals in the opening period at the BayArena. This is unlikely to be a slow burner.
