Bam Adebayo addresses potential big changes to Heat amid Giannis rumors

MIAMI – With the Miami Heat’s exit interviews taking place on Thursday afternoon, star Bam Adebayo spoke about a myriad of topics pertaining to the team and the future outlook of the franchise. While the Heat captain spoke about the incident with LaMelo Ball of the Charlotte Hornets, where he suffered a lower back injury in the play-in tournament loss, Adebayo also spoke about the potential for changes coming to the team.

There’s no denying the disappointment that Miami has about their season, finishing as the 10th seed in the Eastern Conference, losing in the first play-in tournament games after reaching the tourney for the fourth straight year. This season was different, as the team sees their season end in mid-April, a rare sight with the last time the Heat missed the playoffs being the 2018-19 basketball year.

That offseason, Miami made a big trade for Jimmy Butler, with the organization looking to land another big name, with the one talked about the most being Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. As the team will continue to be linked to Antetokounmpo, the ultimate goal is to pair another alpha player with Adebayo, who was asked if the team needs to make changes this summer.

“That is not a question for me. That is a question for Spo and Pat Riley,” Adebayo said. “Obviously, the organization evaluates if we need to make changes or not. Seeing as we missed the playoffs, probably will be changes. So, my thing is for me to be prepared to have that conversation if there are changes.”

As rumors around the Heat will continue throughout the offseason, especially in relation to Antetokounmpo with the team gearing up to conjure a package the Bucks will accept, the one untouchable appears to be Adebayo. The 28-year-old has been the flagbearer for Miami since the retirements of Dwyane Wade and Udonis Haslem, with him being the face of the franchise.

Meaning, if Adebayo were to voice frustration on the disappointment of the team, people would listen. However, there is a mutual understanding between the team and Adebayo on what winning means to each other.

“You see how the last four years have been,” Adebayo said. “You can go in and voice that. Everybody in this building knows I want to win. I put on that jersey almost every game through hell and high water just because I want to win. I want to put us in a position to win. When you don’t win, I always put it on myself. That’s me going in the summer, trying to be better. Trying to figure out how I can take my game to the next level, how I can be a better captain.”

“And the business side is not my side,” Adebayo continued. “To me, being able to share my opinion is more important because that means you have somebody actively listening to you. For them to listen is me telling them I want to win. That’s the bottom line.

One would think enough is enough for the Heat after four straight play-in tournament appearances and now being eliminated from playoff contention at this point of the year. While fans have been used to Miami going after stars and not landing them, it could all pay off this summer with a deal to acquire Antetokounmpo. Time will tell.
