Astros make intriguing roster move after placing outfielder on IL
The Houston Astros are reportedly making two roster moves on Tuesday, according to Brian McTaggart of MLB.com.
“Source: Astros OF Lamonte Wade Jr. will be placed on the 10-day IL today (right hamstring strain) and OF Joey Loperfido will be called up from Triple-A Sugar Land to join the club tonight. It will be Loperfido’s first time with the Astros since he strained his quad April 17,” McTaggart reported.
The Astros recently signed Wade to a contract. The 32-year-old outfielder appeared in only four games before landing on the IL. He hit .333/.385/.750 during that span. The Astros have dealt with injury concerns throughout the season. Losing Wade to the IL is far from ideal, but the Loperfido promotion is intriguing.
As McTaggart reported, Loperfido has not played at the big league level since April. The 27-year-old is currently in his first season with the Astros. He displayed potential through his first 20 games played of the 2026 season, as he recorded a slash line of .276/.348/.362 to go along with five doubles. The left-handed hitting outfielder could certainly make an impact in Houston’s lineup.
The Astros are in an interesting overall spot. While injuries have impacted the team and they are just 31-37, Houston is still only 4.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners for first place in the American League West standings. Of course, the AL Wild Card remains a possibility as well.
Will the Astros bounce back and make a legitimate postseason run? Only time will tell, but the potential is present for Houston to get back on track.
The Astros next game is scheduled for Tuesday night against the Los Angeles Angels in Anaheim at 9:38 PM EST.
