Astros’ Jose Altuve exits Tigers game with apparent injury
Jose Altuve returned from his oblique strain nearly one month ago. But now the Houston Astros star exited the Detroit Tigers game with another MLB Injury.
Altuve took this collision at second base from Zach McKinstry of Detroit, then became hobbled. He tried staying in the game but eventually left as Raynel Delgado stepped in.

However, if he misses time I would project Brice Matthews to gain the most playing time. pic.twitter.com/ZhjM5uSpeY

The injury occurred during the bottom of the seventh inning with the Astros down 6-5. Altuve previously sustained a Grade 2 strain in his oblique back on May 16. It appears that he re-injured that same ailment.
Delgado came in as relief. However, baseball analyst and Astros reporter Mike Kurland believes that Brice Matthews could rise as Altuve’s long term replacement if the all-star must sit out extensively.
Altuve is battling more than injuries for 2026. The past World Series winner is dealing with early season inconsistency too. Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher and two-time Most Valuable Player Shohei Ohtani embarrassed him with one nasty strikeout on May 5. Houston eventually won that game narrowly 2-1, however.
But still Altuve is batting at .240 this season compared to the .265 and .295 from his past two seasons. He hit an average of .311 back in 2023 too, which shows the sudden decline at the bat.
Altuve blasted two home runs earlier in the season: March 30 against the Boston Red Sox which showed his past vintage form. Yet he hasn’t replicated anymore performances of that magnitude since then.
Houston is also struggling this season with a 41-44 mark. Although the Astros managed to defeat the Tigers 8-6 after the Altuve injury. Houston scored three runs in the eighth inning to pull away.
