Andy Flower emerges as frontrunner for next Test head coach job as England open to job-share with IPL duties
The cricketing world was put into a frenzy when Brendon McCullum's departure as England's Test coach was announced in the late hours of Sunday, July 13. McCullum oversaw a 2-1 loss at the hands of New Zealand in a series which also saw skipper Ben Stokes announce his retirement from international cricket at the end of the third Test at Trent Bridge.
McCullum, however, is set to continue as the coach of the England white-ball teams, with whom he oversaw a 4-0 thrashing of India in the recent five-match T20I series, also taking the team to the top of the ICC rankings. His departure brings to an end a four-year tenure, which saw incredible highs and upsetting lows. England's fearless and all-out-attack style of cricket took the world by storm and also ended up being their undoing in the winter Ashes in 2025-26, losing 4-1 to Australia.
As reported by Cricinfo, a host of successors are being lined up for the job, who will also have the freedom to simultaneously work in the IPL despite the clash with the start of England's domestic season. The move points to the England & Wales Cricket Board's (ECB) interest in the return of former head coach Andy Flower.
Flower had overseen a golden period of success in English cricket, winning away Test series in India and Australia. He is currently the head coach of the Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL, which he led to successive trophies in 2025 and 2026. The English board's CEO Richard Gould said that they would be open to making accommodations for the new coach to manage their time between IPL commitments and Test duty, similar to players like Jacob Bethell and Jofra Archer.
"We need to be progressive in these issues. We've got players trying to balance between county, franchise, international cricket. It's a really busy calendar. We may well have to do the same with our coaching staff and supporting staff; we already do, to an extent. But I think that is something that we will have to have a look at," Gould said, as quoted by Cricinfo.
"One of the difficulties is the IPL dates are not a fixed thing, and there maybe will be some compromises that need to be made along the way. But the important thing is that we've got the best individuals that offer the best fit and we get them into those positions. It is something that we would certainly consider," he added.
England have lost seven of their last ten Tests dating back to the series against India in 2025. McCullum's place was under scrutiny after the 4-1 defeat in Australia, marred by a host of other off-field issues stemming from a mid-series trip to Noosa, but he managed to keep his place for the New Zealand series. Gould has stated that the results prompted his decision, despite not wanting to take 'the easy option' of not wanting to let the coach go after the Ashes debacle.Â
"The results have not gone the way that we wanted them to go. It's always been a results-based business. Results mean that we need to make a change. At this particular time, we've got 10 Test matches until the Ashes start in 2027, and so whilst we have a significant amount of time to prepare again for that with a new coach coming in, we want to use as much time as we have available," Gould stated.
Up to 10 names to be shortlisted by ECB for McCullum's successor
Gould further stated that there is a 'six to ten' member shortlist for names to replace McCullum, with these names coming from diverse global backgrounds. As reported in the Daily Telegraph, while local names such as Glamorgan head coach Richard Dawson and Jonathan Trott are also in contention, overseas names such as Justin Langer and Rahul Dravid are also being discussed. Langer also coaches the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL.Â
"It will be a targeted selection process. We often do a lot of work in terms of planning as to succession - I will always keep a shortlist going of coaches and various other positions and in truth, this position is probably one where the shortlist is no more than six to 10 names globally of a diverse nature. In terms of conversations, they will start to happen now and [managing director of men's cricket] Rob Key will be leading on those," Gould told BBC Sport
The Three Lions are set to play India in a three-match ODI series with the first fixture scheduled for July 14 at Edgbaston. Their next Test assignment will be a three-match series against Pakistan, with the ECB looking to lock down their coach and new captain before the start of the series.Â
