Adam Silver reveals head-turning AI plan for reviewing calls
One of the biggest topics of discussion among NBA fans on social media during the playoffs has been officiating and referees’ calls. It’s a topic that’s reached the highest levels of the league with NBA commissioner Adam Silver recently laying out a plan to address one of the biggest complaints in the time it takes to review calls such as out-of-bounds decisions.
During a recent appearance on ‘The Pat McAfee Show,’ Adam Silver gave initial details regarding an AI program to essentially assist the referees when it comes to reviewing out-of-bounds calls.
“We’re going to move to a system like that where that whole category of calls will be automatic,” Silver said. It’s going to be ‘Laker ball,’ Knick ball,’ whatever it is, ‘Thunder ball.’ Those calls will be done by an AI automated system with cameras lined around the court. And it will take all of those so-called objective calls out of the hands of the referees.
“It’ll be instantaneous, it’ll be automatic, just play on, let’s go, Spurs inbound and you move on. You won’t have to deal with challenges on those calls, but it will also allow the officials on the more difficult subjective calls to give their full attention to those.”
Silver also spoke about the issue of flopping which has come up quite a bit during the Western Conference Finals series between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs.
In theory, it’s a good plan as far as cutting down the review time for something as simple as an out-of-bounds call. But in practice, it will be interesting to see if machines will be able to get the calls right.
