76ers fans will cry all over again over Jared McCain reliving emotional trade to Thunder

With the Philadelphia 76ers trading Jared McCain in the middle of the season, there was no doubt disappointment from the fanbase when the deal was made, as now the guard is producing with the Oklahoma City Thunder. While the 76ers’ front office has changed since that trade with Daryl Morey being fired, McCain relives the deal that will surely have fans missing the young star.

Back in February, Philadelphia dealt McCain to Oklahoma City for a 2026 first-round pick and three second-round picks (one for 2026), which came as a shock for the 16th overall pick in 2024. McCain would be interviewed by Marc J. Spears of Andscape and said that he cried when he heard he was being traded.

“I was on the bus with the Sixers, and we were heading to the airport in San Francisco,” McCain said. “I texted my agent for a gym in L.A., and he called me, and I think he’s calling me about the gym. He is like, ‘They’re about to trade you.’ Then [then-Sixers president Daryl Morey] called me five minutes later and told me I was traded. It was pretty wild, and I started crying immediately.”

Jared McCain still has love for his time on the 76ers

There’s no denying that the news of the 76ers trading McCain hit him hard, but he has now found a role with the Thunder, even producing in the playoffs after scoring 12 points and closing out the Game 2 win of the Western Conference Finals over the San Antonio Spurs. Still, McCain has love for Philadelphia and the players on the team.

“Those are my brothers and still are my brothers to this day,” McCain said. “It was definitely tough. They thought I was joking when I told them, and then I started crying. Then they were like, ‘Oh, this is serious.’ Then we got off the bus, and they all came up to me, and I still went on the plane with them to L.A. I still miss Philly to this day.”

It remains to be seen who Philadelphia takes with the picks acquired in the McCain trade.
