Young played for San Francisco from 1980 to 1982. His standout season was 1981, when he recorded 37 catches for 400 yards along with five touchdowns. He scored the first touchdown in the Divisional Round against the New York Giants. In the NFC Playoffs, San Francisco defeated the Dallas Cowboys 28-27 thanks to “The Catch” by Dwight Clark on a six-yard touchdown reception thrown by Joe Montana that has become iconic.
San Francisco reached Super Bowl XIV against the Cincinnati Bengals and won 26-21. Young went on to win the Len Eshmont Award, given to the player who showed the most courage.
Afterward, the 49ers began a dynasty run of four Super Bowls in the 1980s.
Young was drafted as the 6th overall pick by the Philadelphia 76ers in 1973 out of USC. He would go on to play 13 NFL seasons with the Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, and Seattle Seahawks.
Young would go on to win the 1973 NFL Rookie of the Year award and became a three-time Pro-Bowler from 1973 to 1975. Along the way, Young recorded 418 receptions for 5,106 yards and 27 touchdowns.
In later life, Young volunteered for organizations such as the United Way of America and the 1990 Goodwill Games.
