The Houston Texans know the plan behind center for now and the future. And they have hopes for a big 2026 season. But the young guys need to pitch in and help. And here is the Texans’ rookie who stood out the most in the team’s 2026 minicamp.

The Texans hope they got a lift for their defense with their second-round pick. Defensive tackle Kayden McDonald has been turning heads already in his short time with the Texans.

He’s 6-foot-2 and 326 pounds and could help a great defense get even better.

Texans like what they see from DT Kayden McDonald

One reason McDonald is held in high regard is his ability to defend the run, according to The Athletic.

“McDonald’s powerful skill set is at its best when he acts as a run defender,” Dane Brugler wrote. “He resets the line of scrimmage with his initial burst and power, attacking and shucking blocks from a leveraged position. He plays games of peek-a-boo (and often wins) with ball carriers willing to test A-gap run lanes. And his awareness allows him to fill up the stat sheet with line-of-scrimmage stops.”

But he’s not a finished product as a pass rusher.

“McDonald will require time to develop a pass-rush identity,” Brugler wrote. “But his dominant run-game qualities will make him immediately useful from different interior alignments. He projects as an early-down rookie, with a role that should continue to expand.”

Still, the early results are promising. Head coach DeMeco Ryans said he has seen good things from McDonald, according to the Houston Chronicle.

“When he’s across the line from an offensive lineman, no matter who it was, he was knocking those guys back in the backfield,” Ryans said. “That translates to Houston Texans defense.

“We want to knock guys back, he does that. He’s still a very young player who has so much room to grow, so much room to ascend. It starts right here today. You see him in his individual drills. He has the power. We can win with that type of power.”

DT Kayden McDonald brings a lot to the table

Ryans said he saw things from McDonald on tape that solidified the team’s decision to go after him in the draft, according to texanswire.com.

“What I like about Kayden and his tape at Ohio State is the physicality, it shows up,” Ryans said.

And there’s long-term potential for McDonald, according to Sports Illustrated.

“He has the relentless mentality and physicality the Texans covet in their offensive linemen,” Jared Koch wrote. “(He) can be a positive run-blocker with above-average athleticism, and no matter whether it’s at guard or center, projects to be a familiar piece on Houston’s front to help iron out their protection troubles.”

Texans’ young defenders learning the ropes

Playing for Ryans requires toughness. And McDonald has been experiencing that already. Ryans said it’s a teaching thing, according to ESPN.

“I don’t have to say much on it,” Ryans said after Day 1 of rookie minicamp. “But I still have to make sure I teach our rookies what that looks like. A lot of guys are coming from a lot of different places all over the country, a lot of different schools that do things a lot of different ways. We’re just going to have to let them know how we do it here in Houston.

“It may be a little different, but we believe in what we do here,” Ryans said. “We think it works. We build it around the people. That’s what you’ll notice about the draft class when you talk to them.”

Overall, the Texans could be even more gnarly than they were on defense in 2025. If McDonald develops into any kind of force, the Texans could move to the next level on defense.
